Savage River
Task
The objective of the $15m ABM Savage River New Workshop Facility was to provide a fully functional facility close to the North Pit. Construction entailed the completion of a new Reliability Centre for fuelling and servicing of vehicles and a new Workshop for repair and maintenance of ABM mining machinery. Together with these key elements , significant infrastructure was also installed across the site. A new hydrocarbon separator was constructed to protect the Savage River from spills across the North Pit. This was a reinforced concrete structure to below river level where significant dewatering and construction issues were overcome.
Challenges
The project called upon a range of skills possessed by Shaw. In construction of the Workshop and Reliability Centre, project Management was the key to controlling and organising the large number of sub trades required for timely completion. A complete water system was installed to service the buildings and truck washes, along with a fire main and dust suppression. In total over 4.5km of poly pipe was welded and installed across the site with new header tanks, valves and a fire main. Two new sub stat ions were also provided for power to the site. Shaw constructed and installed al l required conduits, buildings and panels. Butt-welded steel pipe work was used in three areas, underground fuel lines and the light and heavy truck washes. The Shaw technical team supplied construction input to the design with pipe work then fabricated and installed by Shaw boiler makers. Pavement and stormwater works then completed the project. At peak times, over 80 personnel were present on site, working over 60,000 man-hours in a nine-month period

- A new heavy and light truck wash.
- Installation of a Fire Main water supply across the site.
- Installation of 1.5 and 1.0 MVA substations.
- Electrical service installation.
- Construction of a new office and administration centre.
- Construction of a Hydrocarbon separator.
- Pavement, windrow storm water and infrastructure works.
- Construction and installation of butt-welded fuel lines below ground.
- Installation of a new Sewerage Treatment Plant and Recycled Water System
Outcome
The project was completed with zero environmental incidents. No LTI’s were recorded with a minimum of first aid injuries.
